lab 04 portrait and production lighting assignment
Lab Assignment 04
For this weeks lab we were tasked with the following, upload 5 different portrait photos and then edit them to our desire afterwards using adobe photoshop the outcome are as presented down below.
Split
(white balance is on for all 5 photos)
The image above is know as a split for its quite obvious contrast change form dark to light almost as if it's dividing the face in half. In split the light had to be positioned directly beside the designated model to get the added affect of the shadow on the other halve. The original image looked a lot brighter than before this was changed it in photo shop and the values go as follows.
f/ 5.0 1/20 shutter speed ISO 200 (camera settings)
Adobe White Balance Editing
Temperature = -17
Tint = -18
Exposure = -1.75
Contrast = -8
Highlights = -58
Shadows = -16
Whites = 19
Blacks = -100
Over all I'm happy enough with the results of this image but I think it is slightly over exposed on one side almost creating a blinding effect this could've been fixed by lowering the power of the flash used.
Broad
This image had the light and the model repositioned the light is only flashing on one side while the model is also not facing the lighting. This almost creates the exact same photo as a split however theres more of a florescent tone to the photo rather than a dark split in between the face.
f/ 14.0 1/160 shutter speed ISO 200 (camera settings)
Adobe White Balance Editing
Temperature = -15
Tint = 15
Exposure = 1.40
Contrast = -40
Highlights = 30
Shadows = 30
Whites = -40
Blacks = 50
Butterfly
This image is known as a butterfly image and it's recognisable for it's shadow effect just underneath the nose or cheecks, the light should be positioned right above the model and they should be pretty much un the direct light. The camera will be positioned head on and adjacent the model but behind the flash and this sort of effect should be produced.
f/ 10.0 1/160 shutter speed ISO 200 (camera settings)
Adobe White Balance Editing
Temperature = -15
Tint = 20
Exposure = -0.20
Contrast = 25
Highlights = -15
Shadows = 20
Whites = 30
Blacks = -25
Rembrandt
The rembrandt image is used almost like a split affect however the light is placed in front of the model and at a 45 degree angle to them and is placed at a distance to where the model sits/stands. This use of photography is almost like a design of mystery and curiosity with the use of angled light.
f/ 14.0 1/160 shutter speed ISO 200 (camera settings)
Adobe White Balance Editing
Temperature = -45
Tint = -13
Exposure = -0.65
Contrast = 27
Highlights = -26
Shadows = -44
Whites = 0
Blacks = -58
Loop
The final image is known as loop lighting and is quite familiar its nothing close to a split because this type if lighting gives the model a type of rim or edge type of shadow, you notice the shadow but everything else is kept in focus especially the face. The light source is close to the model but it's pointed downward directly at the model.
f/ 8 1/160 shutter speed ISO 200 (camera settings)
Adobe White Balance Editing
Temperature = 10
Tint = 30
Exposure = -0.70
Contrast = 5
Highlights = 80
Shadows = 10
Whites = -45
Blacks = -35
All in all I feel like my assignment was a success and the important focal points I needed to hit were the main focus of the brief, the group was given a set period of time for this lab I wish there was more time for more photos. I could’ve produced more photos for me to edit in adobe unfortunately that wasn’t the case, I’m still happy with my results and look forward to the constructive feedback from my peers.
